| Diabetes Is a Risk in Pregnancy That Carries Risks Beyond
Gestational diabetes, which affects about 4 percent of pregnant women, usually occurs midpregnancy, by the 28th week of gestation. Though its causes are unclear, there are some clues, namely placental hormones that suppress the action of insulin in the mother. This can result in insulin resistance: the mother’s pancreas continues to spew out insulin but her body’s cells fail to use it properly to process blood sugar, causing sugar levels to rise in the mother’s blood. |

The etiology of pelvic girdle syndrome is largely unknown. Mechanical (e.g. different types of load), traumatic and hormonal factors are believed to be significant. Pelvic girdle syndrome often appears in the first half of pregnancy, a period in which mechanical factors are unlikely to have much influence. This strengthens the hypothesis that hormones are an important cause. |

Diabetic women who get pregnant are three to four times more likely to have a child with birth defects than other women, according to new government research. The study is the largest of its kind, and provides the most detailed information to date on types of birth defects that befall the infants of diabetic mothers, including heart defects, missing kidneys and spine deformities. |
